Layers of protection

Hi Everyone,
The question “Why do I need to back up my data if I have a hot spare in another location?” recently came up. Apparently the person I was discussing it with believed that his backup and disaster recovery was completely taken care of by this one method. What he failed to account for is the fact that, as I discussed in a prior post, it is very important to have layers of protection because not all threats are the same. The only question I asked him in response was “What would you do if a virus was replicated throughout your network and then to your hot spare?”
This is a perfect example of why multiple layers of protection are required. You could swap over to a hot spare that is just as damaged due to the very technology you are relying on to protect you. This isn’t a flaw in the technology, just the strategy.
Backing up and allowing the files to be versioned allows you to recover completely and even fine tune your recovery efforts to specific requirements.
Don’t fall into a false sense of security just because you have one leg of a strategy. Just like a stool with one leg, you will fall over at some point.
Have a great holiday!!!
All my best,
John
